Schafer Gear Set to Expand. Investments.

Published 9/10/2009

Schafer Gear has recently acquired business in several new markets. In order to meet this demand, Schafer Gear is investing an additional $3 million in new equipment. This investment will add two new automated turning centers, CNC hobbing, gear grinding and deburring equipment in the South Bend facility. A new turning center in Fort Wayne was recently added as well. The Rockford facility is acquiring an additional 800 mm (32”) vertical turning capability to supplement the 800 mm gear hobbing and 800 mm gear grinding capabilities.

Schafer Gear selected Okuma LT200M twin spindle, twin turret, 4-axis multi-function turning centers with live tooling and OSP P200M control and bar feed; Takamaz X-100 with TSK in-line gauging; Mitsubishi GA20E hobbing machine with full automation and a fully automated Gleason 160TWG gear grinder. The Rockford facility added an Okuma & Howa V80R turning center and earlier a Fellows/Pfauter P900 hobbing machine.

In addition, during the past 24 months, the Rockford plant added a new Nile ZE800 gear grinder and a new Okuma & Howa V80R. At the precision machining plant in Fort Wayne, a Mazak Quick Turn 200-MSY Mark II turning Center was added.

Overall investment over the past two years is $6 Million. With these additional capabilities and capacities, Schafer Gear is in excellent position to service new customers and still retain open capacity to accept new customers.
